Nick Crombie

Consultant Trauma Anaesthetist at University Hospitals Birmingham

Nick is a Consultant Trauma Anaesthetist at University Hospitals Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham) where he was appointed in 2008. He took on both civilian and military major trauma work including burns anaesthesia, and has been both Clinical Lead for anaesthesia and Associate Medical Director for governance and risk.

Nick has an extensive pre-hospital emergency medicine background starting in 2006. He responds as a BASICS doctor and was a HEMS Consultant for 10 years. During this time he was appointed as the Clinical Lead for Midlands Air Ambulance, and also the West Midlands MERIT service from its inception in 2012. He held the first Training Programme Director post for PHEM in the West Midlands, and has examined for both the Diploma and Fellowship in Immediate Medical Care.

Caroline Leech

Consultant in Emergency Medicine, University Hospital Coventry

Caroline is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and the Major Trauma Lead at University Hospital Coventry. She has 20 years experience of civilian pre-hospital care in the UK and is current Deputy Clinical Lead of The Air Ambulance Service in the Midlands. Caroline is an Associate Editor for the Emergency Medicine Journal, Executive Board Member of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, RCSEd, and Course Director of the popular WMESS cadaveric surgical skills course in Coventry. Her mission is to improve education, research and equality in her specialist interests of trauma and pre-hospital care.

John Bishop

Senior Medical Statistician, Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit

After studying Mathematics and Statistics at the University of St Andrews, Jon stayed on and completed a PhD in Statistical Ecology in 2008. After working in Primary Care at the University of Birmingham, he joined BCTU as a Statistician for the Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC) in October 2012 and progressed to the role of senior statistician in 2018.

His research interests include the design, conduct and analysis of large scale late phase randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs). In his BCTU work he assesses medical, surgical, and complex interventions in a diverse portfolio of clinical trials including the areas of Trauma, Maternal Health, Orthopaedics, and Renal Disease. In his SRMRC work, Jon supports various studies of clinical data, both trial and non-trial related, including work covering burns, surgery, ophthalmology and military trauma.

Simon Carley

Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Manchester Foundation Trust & visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University

Simon Carley MB ChB, PGDip, DipIMC (RCS Ed), FRCS (Ed)(1998), FHEA, FAcadMed, FRCEM, MPhil, MD, PhD is Creator, Webmaster, owner and Editor in Chief of the St Emlyn’s blog and podcast. He is visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University and a Consultant in adult and paediatric Emergency Medicine at Manchester Foundation Trust. He is co-founder of BestBets, St.Emlyns and the MSc in emergency medicine at Manchester Metropolitan University. Gavin Perkins

Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Warwick, England

Gavin Perkins is Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Warwick. He leads the emergency and critical care group within Warwick Clinical Trials Unit. He served as Chief Investigator for the BALTI, BALTI-prevention and PARAMEDIC-1 (LUCAS) trial and is currently Chief Investigator for the PARAMEDIC-2 (Adrenaline) and Breathe Trials. Clinically he holds appointments as a Consultant Physician in Critical Care Medicine at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and MERIT Team Consultant with West Midlands Ambulance Service. Prof Perkins is a Director of Research for the Intensive Care Foundation and Clinical Speciality Lead for Critical Care (West Midlands CRN), Division 6 Clinical Research Lead (West Midlands CRN). He has been a member (2000-10) and then chairman (2010-present) of the ALS Sub-committee during which time he developed, evaluated and implemented the e-ALS course. He has served as ILCOR and ERC Co-chair for BLS/AED since 2010. In these roles he has developed collaborative networks with international partners and co-ordinated the revision to the 2015 Utstein cardiac arrest template. He was elected as ILCOR Co-chair in 2015.

Michael Christian

Chief Medical Officer, BC Emergency Health Services, Canada

Mike Christian is a Critical Care Physician in Pre-hospital, Aviation & Military Medicine. He started in health care as a Paramedic, and has since served in roles at all levels of health care from front-line clinician through to the executive and board levels. In 2018 Mike was named one of the top 3 most influential authors in disaster medicine. Dr Christian has held a wide range of positions, including being a Specialist Medical Officer (IM/Critical Care) & Flight Surgeon with the Canadian Armed Forces

Clare Bosanko

Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust

Clare Bosanko is a consultant in Emergency Medicine at Derriford Major Trauma Centre in Plymouth, and Critical Care Doctor for Devon Air Ambulance. She trained in the Midlands, working at Royal Stoke Hospital, for Midlands Air Ambulance and WMAS MERIT, and completing a fellowship with KIDS paediatric retrieval and transfer service, before making the move to the south west. She is one half of the team which produces PHEMCast; a UK prehospital podcast.

Jason Smith

UK Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Academic Department of Military Emergency Medicine, Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Birmingham

Professor Jason Smith joined the Royal Navy and qualified in medicine from Newcastle University in 1992. He underwent specialist training in emergency medicine in London, Plymouth and Sydney before being appointed as a consultant at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth in 2005.

He is currently the UK Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Academic Department of Military Emergency Medicine, Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Birmingham. His research interests include the management of patients with life-threatening haemorrhage.

Hazel Smith

Research Paramedic, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham

Hazel has worked in the NHS since leaving university in 1999, joining West Midlands Ambulance Service in 2002 firstly as an ambulance technician then qualifying as a paramedic two years later. After some time on the road and in the control room working on the Clinical Support Desk, she completed an MSc in Emergency Planning and Management, which enabled her to work in this field for a few years as a Health Emergency Planning Officer.

Hazel discovered the world of research at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, firstly working as a Research Practitioner on the 100,000 Genomes Project, then as Research Paramedic on the RePHILL study funded by the NIHR. During this period, she led on PHEM liaison, logistics and training and conducted associated field studies.

She is currently employed by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust as a Programme Support Officer as part of the delivery and programme management team supporting trauma, burns and critical care research at UHB. The role enables her to continue liaison with the PHEM community supporting and encouraging studies which bridges the pre-hospital and in-hospital environments.
