Critical Care Reviews Newsletter

Newsletter 680  |  December 23rd, 2024

Merry Christmas

Welcome to the 680th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research and open access articles from across the medical literature over the past seven days.

The highlights of this week's edition are randomised controlled trials on sovateltide in patients with acute cerebral ischaemic stroke & seven versus 14 days of antimicrobial therapy for severe multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections in ICU patients; systematic reviews and meta analyses on the effect of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery & ventilator-associated pneumonia in patients with traumatic brain injury; and observational studies on covert perioperative strokes in older patients having non-cardiac surgery & nasal high flow to modulate dyspnea in orally intubated patients.

There are also guidelines on palliative and end-of-life care in stroke & large-core ischemic stroke endovascular treatment; narrative reviews on Guillain–Barré syndrome & managing awake intubation; editorials on nimodipine in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage & using the ventilator to predict fluid responsiveness; and commentaries on whether crystalloid-based fluid expansion strategies are still relevant in trauma-induced hemorrhagic shock & improving outcomes for surrogate decision-makers after the ICU; as well as an obituary on Luciano Gattinoni: a tribute to a pioneer in intensive care medicine.

If you only have time to read one review article this week, try this one on type 2 myocardial infarction: challenges in diagnosis and treatment.

CCR Down Under Meeting 2025

Due to the success of CCR Down Under earlier this month, we will be running the event again next year, in the week of December 8th. CCR Down Under is run in partnership with the Alfred Intensive Care Academic Centre.
